[ARCHIVED] Public Safety Facility Construction Update 5.17.24

What happened this week?

Demolition of the site is complete. Crews are working on sorting materials to be recycled or disposed.

A reminder of the breakdown of what happens to the materials:

Masonry & concrete material: these items will be taken to a local ready mix plant to be processed and recycled for future use

Steel members: steel materials will be taken to a steel recycling facility to so the raw material can be melted down and reformed, or reused

Copper materials: these items will also be processed at a recycling facility similar to the steel

All other materials: all other materials will be taken to a waste company and sorted further. Any items that can be salvaged will be sent on for additional recycling at this point

What is happening next week?

Material sorting and removal will continue and wrap up later in the week.

Public Safety Facility Construction Continues with crews sorting materials

Why a new building?

When the planning process started, we looked at this project as a remodel and addition to the current fire station. As we went through the structural analysis, it was determined that due to the foundation and design of the current building, parts of it would need to be demolished and then rebuilt.

Because a part of the building would need to be demolished in order for us to add on, it ended up being a similar cost to build a new building. With a new building, we also have some additional benefits:
• more efficient use of space
• long-term maintenance for new building is more cost effective
• reduces construction timeline
• provides flexibility for the future
