Sanitary Sewer

System Overview

The Water & Sewer Department maintains

  • 150 miles of sanitary sewer pipe
  • 2,800 manholes
  • 7 sanitary sewer lift stations.

Sewage Treatment

The sanitary sewer collection system flows to a Metropolitan Council of Environmental Services lift station and is pumped to the Blue Lake Waste Water Treatment Facility in Shakopee.

Sewer Cleaning

The sanitary collection system is cleaned once every three years with a high-pressure jetting machine, which helps eliminate blockages. The raw sewage is pumped to the Blue Lake Treatment Plant by Shakopee.

Sump Pumps

Water from ground water sump pumps cannot be pumped into the sanitary sewer. Please check your sump pump discharge line to assure it is hooked up correctly.

All water discharged into the sanitary sewer system is metered by the Metropolitan Council and billed to the City of Chaska, which reflects on your sewer bill charges. If you are unsure of sump pump discharge, please call the Sewer Department at 952-448-4335.

To address the problem of excess clean water being sent through the sanitary sewer system (inflow & infiltration), the City works with residents to make sure their water and sewer connections make efficient use of the system and keep costs reasonable for everyone.

Sewer Backups

The City and the property owner share responsibility for conveyance of sewage.  The sewer service line from your property to the City's main line is the responsibility of the property owner.

Sanitary sewer system problems are not common and our maintenance procedures are intended to avoid or minimize such problems in the City's sewer system.  To the best of our ability, the City performs continual maintenance on its portion of the sanitary sewer system.
